How To Create Your Twitter Plan Step-By-Step

Posted on 01 October 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

twitter-plan-step-by-step

Why You Need A Plan

Plans help you stay focused

It is easy to get distracted on Twitter. Some people become addicted and lose their main objective: to position themselves as leaders in their industry. A plan can help you stay on course.

Having a plan can help you get others on board

Imagine a movie director showing up on set without a screenplay. How hard would it be to instruct the camera men where to place the tripod, show the lighting crew where to light the scene, and the give the actors their lines without any written script? Not to mention remembering the information. Having a screenplay covers the basics and gives the filmmaker freedom to be creative with everything else.

A Twitter plan will enable you to show others where you are going. It will give them a framework that can be measured against.

Your boss likes plans

Your executives or boss will love seeing a Twitter plan. They probably don’t get Twitter and a simple plan can help make it tangible and approachable for them.

TIP: Knowing that your boss and executives may not be web savvy – be sure to steer clear from any jargon in your Twitter plan. Leave out terms like tweet, retweet, DM, etc. Instead use language that your audience knows. For example: a tweet could be called a message or post. Retweet could be called a forwarded message. And a DM could be called a private Twitter message.

What Should Your Plan Look Like

Simple is good

The best plans are simple. They are easy enough for a 12-year-old to read and they lay out a step-by-step process for other people to follow. Your boss, colleagues, and employees will appreciate simplicity.

Short is good

In the same vein of keeping things simple – keep them short as well. Short is better than long. People will actually read your plan if it is short.

You need goals

Decide if you want to brand yourself or your organization, or both. Will you set up multiple accounts? These are questions you need to answer as you craft your plan.

Measure your goals

My recommendation is that you have multiple elements to your plan. First, It is important that you have a clear agenda. You need to measure how many followers you attract, the interaction you get from your followers, and how many people click on the link to visit your website. There are tools that you can use to measure these like Hootsuite and Tweetbeep.

Promote

The second part of your plan should involve how you will promote your Twitter stream. Placing it on your website, business cards and advertising is a great way to get the word out. But what else can you do?

Content

What content you provide and how you provide it will determine the success you have on Twitter. This should be a serious consideration in developing your plan.

Reach

Finally, you need to have a plan for who you will follow. Who will you not follow? Who will you block? For example, there are many pornographic websites that will follow your Twitter feed.

Our recommendation is that you block porn and spam accounts. When we discover a pornographic site has started following us, we block them immediately.

However, if you are an animal rights organization, and the NRA begins following your feed, you may want to allow them since you might draw in some people who are on the fence in regards to animal rights and welfare.

At the end of the day, you are the best person to judge your followers. It depends on your industry and business.

How To Plan The Plan

Selecting your Twitter niche – a few questions to ask

  • Who is your niche target market?
  • What type of content do you intend to provide them?
  • How often will you publish this content?
  • How will you provide value to your followers?
  • What do you have to offer?
  • Will you include photos, videos, and links?
  • How will you stand out from others in your industry?
  • How will you increase your already established credibility or develop new credibility?
  • Will you be the one tweeting for your organization? Will there be more than one?

The 60/40 rule

As you work through these questions we recommend applying the 60/40 rule to your plan. Sixty percent of your time should be spent posting valuable and helpful links, tips, resources and advice. We call this “seeding the conversation.”

Then as people begin to interact with the content you’ve posted, begin follow up by discussing with them. Listen for discussion entry points and begin to engage your followers. You should then spend 40 percent of your time in conversation and discussion.

The real secret to saving time and making the 60/40 plan work for you

Lack of time is the biggest excuse people have for not using Twitter to market and promote their businesses. Here is a HUGE secret. All of your “60 percent” twitter posts can be planned and scheduled in advance. You can write your tweets in advance and then post them automatically. This will free up time to monitor and respond to your followers.

A Twitter plan is an important piece when using Twitter. It can set you up for success more than anything else you can do.

How To Retweet On Twitter

Posted on 29 September 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

how-to-retweet

Why Retweet A Message

A good way to pass along good stuff to your followers

If you are having trouble coming up with original posts and content for Twitter, consider forwarding other’s Tweets along to your followers. In this scenario you act as a filter for mass amounts of content and are sharing the most valuable stuff. You will still be seen as a leader in your industry for pointing out valuable information to your followers.

This is a great way to get started with content for your followers without actually having to create. Of course the eventual goal is to eventually create your own stuff. But this is a good way to get started.

A good way to make friends

When you pass along a message in a retweet, you show up in the @mention area of the person who wrote the original Twitter post. This is a great way to make friends with other people. When they see you forwarding their posts to your network, they can’t help but take notice. Don’t be surprised if you gain them as a follower.

Way to distribute breaking news to your network

If you follow a lot of people on Twitter you will inevitably get breaking news the moment it happens. If Michael Jackson dies, for example, you will be able to forward that news to your followers keeping them in the loop. This type of breaking news is even more important when it has to do with your industry or business.

What Is A Retweet

Like forwarding email

When you receive an email that you would like to pass along to others you press the forward button and choose a recipient. With Twitter you can also forward messages to your followers. By simply placing the capital letters RT (this stands for retweet) in front of the message you are “forwarding” a message. Now all the people following you will see this post.

This can be used to:

  • Show other people you value their message by passing it on
  • Redistribute breaking news to your personal network
  • Keep interesting content flowing without having to personally write anything

Labeling the retweet

To make a retweet you simply copy the original message and add the capital letters RT in front of the person’s username.

Here is an example of a retweet:

the-retweet

How To Retweet

Copy and paste the original message

It is simple to retweet a message. Simply copy and paste the original message into the update box on your main Twitter page. There are programs that will do this for you – but for the purposes of understanding how this works we will go over the manual process here.

Add the person’s @name and RT to the front

After you’ve pasted the message add the capital letters RT and the person’s username who made the original post.

RT @JustinKownacki ORIGINAL POST MESSAGE IS PASTED HERE

Click update

That’s it. You’ve now retweeted a message. Now all of your followers will see this message.

Remember, the retweet is to supplement your original Twitter messages that you post. Don’t only send retweeted messages. Be sure to add them in with original content.

How To Twitter: Case Studies Of Companies Using Twitter

Be A Good Citizen On Twitter

What goes around comes around

Call it Karma, call it an act of God – but what you do to others will come back to you tenfold. If you are a good citizen on Twitter the benefits are enormous.

What Makes A Good Twitter Leader

Be sure to do these things:

  • Be proactive.
  • Remember Twitter has “Karma.”
  • Avoid confrontation & Twitter bullies.
  • Repeat your Tweets for maximum visibility, especially if your target market is in other countries/time zones.
  • Thank people and show appreciation.
  • Accept constructive criticism even if you don’t agree.
  • Get the attention of your peers.
  • Start conversations with notable peers.
  • Monitor your Twitter reputation.
  • Beware of Twitter bullies.
  • Real life rules still apply.
  • Quality trumps Quantity
  • Be mindful of who you are following and who is following you, you never know who will see your Twitter posts.

How Organizations Are Leveraging Twitter

Learning stuff in the hallways

My dad always told me that I would learn more in the hallways between classes than I would under the professor’s lectures. He was right. The same goes for Twitter. To really take your Twitter to the next level, it is time to spend some time in the hall.

Here are a few companies that “get” Twitter. As you visit their sites, notice what they do and how they are using the platform to set themselves up as leaders in their industries.

Comcast really does care

Frank Ellison had a great idea to use Twitter to watch for how his company was portrayed on Twitter. He will personally respond to complaints about Comcast service or products.

What the Dell are you doing?

We’ve counted 35 separate Twitter accounts for Dell. You can see a list of them here.  But what is truly amazing is the amount of revenue that Dell has been able to generate exclusively on Twitter.

In an online article authored by the company, Dell claims that they have generated over $2 Million in revenue using their @DellOutlet Twitter account. (Cited From Dell’s Site)

General Motors get’s specific on Twitter

While other companies rely on one or two people, GM has managed to coordinate four people to cover their Twitter feed.

H&R Block party

H&R Block understands how to engage their followers. Almost every Tweet starts with an @mention.

Kodak moments

Although nowhere near the staggering number of Dell, as of this writing, Kodak has four Twitter accounts. You can see them all listed here. I think Kodak does a great job personalizing their Twitter accounts. They put a face to the company.

Whole Foods – Part Twitter

Whole Foods has a huge follower base. They have grown by giving out great content and interacting with their customers.

These are just a few of the “brand” companies that are using Twitter in amazing ways. Your business can harness the same power of Twitter – for free. Now go take action.

How To Twitter: Using @Mentions

Posted on 10 September 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

how-to-twitter-mentions

Why Use An @ Symbol Before A Message

Directs a public message to a specific person

The @ symbol is very important in Twitter. You are most likely familiar with it when using email. In email the @ symbol directs an email to a domain name. For example joelmarkwitt@folkmedia.org. This means that the user (joelmarkwitt) is to get an email at the domain (FolkMedia.org). But in Twitter the @ symbol is used to direct a message to a specific user.

What Do I use

Using the @ symbol shows that you are directing your public message to a specific person. It does not indicate that the message is a private communication between you and another person. Using the @ symbol simply means that you are referencing someone by name in your Twitter post.
For example, if you wanted to direct a public message to me, you would put an @ symbol before my Twitter name (joelmarkwitt) and then type out your message.

All @ symbol posts:

  • Direct attention to a specific person/user
  • Are public
  • Good way to mention someone
  • Can be great ways to get noticed by high profile Twitter people
  • Are used to start discussions
  • Are sometime abused by “spammers” who repeatedly send people @mentions

Here is an example of a Twitter post using the @ symbol. This is one side of a two part discussion:

Here is the message that I  (Joel) was responding to:

How To Use @Mentions

Discussion

The primary purpose of an @mention is to use it in the midst of a discussion. If you put an @ symbol and the username of the person you are responding to, your Tweet will show up in their @mention area. This is an easy way to carry on a back and forth dialogue.

Get someone’s attention

A great way to attract the attention of a high-profile Tweeter is to direct an @mention to them asking a well thought out question. Everyone pays very close attention to the @mention area of their Twitter page. Call it vanity if you will – but we humans love to see who’s talking about us.

Spread goodwill

Using @mentions is also a great way to spread the love to other tweeters. You can recommend other people to follow. Or you can simply refer to people using their @name in your tweets.

You need to understand and use @Mentions on Twitter. By leveraging the power of connecting with people in discussion, you will build leadership and recognition on Twitter quickly.

How To Twitter: Reading A Twitter Page

Posted on 08 September 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

How-To-Twitter---Read-A-Twi

Why You Need To Understand The Anatomy Of A Twitter Page

You can get a snapshot of anyone by viewing their profile

It’s true. A lot can be determined by someone’s Twitter profile. You can see what kind of person they are. By reading their bio you will see what they think they offer the world. (Or don’t offer the world).

It will be easier to identify spam

Spam is always with us online. Unfortunately, it is the nature of doing business on the internet. But when you know how to “read” someone’s Twitter profile you are steps ahead of others who don’t understand how to do this.

You can use your insight to make your page more appealing

Of course the best way to make your Twitter page better is to look at hundreds of other pages and notice what they do right and wrong.

What Does The Anatomy Look Like?

Let’s start by looking at all of the anatomy of your own page. As you begin to understand this you can also “read” other people’s pages.

Update box

This is the area that you type your message (limit 140 text characters) and hit the submit button. Your message (called a tweet) will then go into the public timeline and be seen by all the people who are following you.

Timeline

The timeline is where all the Twitter posts show up from the people you are following. You can see your Twitter posts here also. They are posted i chronological order with the most recent at the top.

Home – Profile – Find People – Settings – Help – Sign Out

At the top of the page are several links.

  • Home: takes you to the main Twitter page where you can update your status.
  • Profile: takes you to your public profile page.
  • Find People: takes you to the find people feature. You can search or even import people from your email accounts.
  • Settings: takes you to your account settings page. You should be familiar with this from yesterday.
  • Help: takes you to the Twitter help area. Twitter offers free help for people who need it.
  • Sign out: signs you out of your account. It is a good idea to sign out when you are finished if you are on a work/shared computer.

Following Count

This shows how many people you are following.

Follower Count

This is how many people are following you.

Tweets (Number Of Updates)

This displays how many updates made to Twitter.

Definitions

This is a space that Twitter has begun to place definitions for various terms and phrases on Twitter. Many suspect that this area will be ad space in the future and a great way for Twitter to make money.

@Mentions

Along the right side of the page you will notice a link just below “home” that will have an @ symbol and your username. If you click on this link it will bring up a screen showing you all the public messages that other people have directed at you by using your @username in their message.

Direct Messages

Direct messages are a way to send private messages to other Twitter users. You can also receive direct messages. Note: you can only send someone a direct message if they are following you. Also – someone can only send you a direct message if you are following them.

Favorites

When a Twitter post comes through your timeline that you’d like to remember or store as a favorite – simply click the star in the top right corner of the tweet. This will add it to your favorites which can be viewed by clicking on the favorite link.

Search Box

The search box is powerful. Use this to search for terms, keywords, people, or topics. This little search box is the secret power of Twitter. We’ll cover that more a future chapter.

Trending Topics

Along the side of the page are the trending topics for all of Twitter. These are the phrases and words that are being posted over and over again right now. This is a great way to stay on the pulse of what is currently happening on Twitter.

RSS Feed

Each twitter page has an RSS feed for importing into a feed reader. RSS stands for really simple syndication. Don’t worry about RSS right now since you are just getting started. That’s for advanced use.

Anatomy of a Twitter Post

A short 140 character message that one posts on Twitter is called a “tweet.” There are several aspects of the tweet that make it useful.

Each Twitter post has a permanent web address URL. This means that a unique URL is given to that post forever. It stands on its own as a singular piece of web content.

For example this permanent URL http://twitter.com/FolkMedia/status/2344697337w will take you to this Twitter post:

Also remember that every post you make to Twitter is public and searchable. As with anything online – you are creating a digital legacy. Your great great grandchildren will be able to read what you write.

How To Read A Twitter Page

Start with the follower/following count

The follow count shows you if this person/business is respected enough to gain followers.  Some people know how to game this – so there are other things to check for.

How many updates?

Usually people who have a lot of updates are real people –not spammers. Plus it shows that they are engaged and active on Twitter.

Where does the link take you?

Just above the bio is a link that Twitter users can use to direct you to any page they want. Where does this take you? You can determine the value of a Twitter page by where they direct you.

Tweet quality

What is the quality of their tweets? Are they just talking about themselves or do you see a lot interaction with other Twitter people.

When you learn the fine art of reading a Twitter profile you will be able to avoid spam, get Twitter followers, save time and communicate effectively with a core of followers who actually want to hear what you want to say.

How To Twitter From A Mobile Phone

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

twitter-mobile-phone

Why Use A Mobile Device

You will be untethered from your desktop

The game changer for most Twitter users is when they discover the power of using Twitter away from their computer. It is really the first application that works better from a mobile device than it does from a desktop.

Twitter is about life and relationships. Most of that happens away from your monitor.

Twitter asks one simple question, “what are you doing?” It begs for you to share what you are doing. The “doing” part of life happens away from our computer screens. So a mobile device is perfect for truly updating people on our lives.

What Is Mobile Tweeting?

Simple: Reading and updating your Twitter account from your mobile device.
It isn’t rocket science. Mobile Tweeting can be done from most phones with internet access. And now some Tweeting can be done through text messaging. For the sake of getting you up and running quickly we will focus on phones that have internet access.

How To Tweet From A Mobile Device

Use the mobile site

Visit the mobile Twitter site www.m.twitter.com and login to your account.

Tweet as normal (sort of)

On the mobile Twitter site you can update your status just like you do on your computer. The big difference is in using @mentions, retweets or direct messages. You must use the manual characters in order to do these from your mobile device.

For example use the following to perform these functions:

  • By putting a lowercase “d,” a space and then the username of the person will send them a direct message. (Sample: d joelmarkwitt how do you get to Rome?)
  • Place an @ symbol in front of a person’s username to send them a public message. (Sample: @joelmarkwitt how do you get to Rome?)
  • Place an RT, space and then the persons @name to RT their message. You will need to manually retype the message since you cannot copy and paste in most mobile phones. (Sample: RT @joelmarkwitt I am in Rome)

iPhone users

If you are an iPhone user you have a ton of options for applications to download through the app store. We recommend using EchoFon to get started.

Mobile Tweeting can open a whole new world to you on Twitter. It can be used to drive immediate attention to events happening in real time and frees you from the chains of your desktop.

Go grab your mobile device, log onto Twitter mobile and take action.

Creating A Twitter Workflow

Posted on 01 September 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

Twitter-Flow-Chart

Why You Need A Workflow

Keeps you organized

Organization is key when you are dealing with mass amounts of information. A short Twitter workflow document can work wonders for your organization.

Saves you time

The goal is to have the maximum impact on Twitter while spending the least amount of time. Time is critical and a workflow can help you achieve better time management, get twitter followers and increase the Twitter followers you have.

Helps you reach the goals you identified in your plan

By having a workflow you are able to work the plan you created. Without a workflow – you are shooting from the hip. Think of the plan as the “why” and “what” of your Twitter strategy and the workflow as the “how.”

What Is A Twitter Workflow?

Think of a Twitter workflow as a “how to” process map

Much like your overall Twitter plan – your Twitter workflow should be short and simple. The key is to treat it like a “how to” process map. When scenario A occurs you take action B. For example, when someone complains about your company or products what is the resulting action? Do you ignore them, engage them, apologize or fight back?

How To Create Your Twitter Workflow

Decide who will champion your Twitter feed

Obviously Twitter is powered by humans. There are tools to augment your Twitter duties but an actual person has to be behind the account. Decide now who that person or persons will be.

This is the document that you use to list Twitter schedules. Who covers weekends? Who covers weekdays? Who covers evenings?

Determine how many times you will update

Your update frequency is important. As you begin to post, you will develop a “cadence” that your followers will come to expect. If you have been posting once per day and suddenly begin posting once every 20 minutes you may shock your followers so much they could unfollow you. Determine your tweet rhythm and stick to it.

List out your negative feedback policy

This is a critical area. How are you going to deal with negative feedback? How are you going to deal with feedback in general? Having this part of your workflow will be critical to your response. (Hint: Your boss will be very interested in this part).

A well defined Twitter work flow can be used as an action document. It should be so thorough that you could hand it to an employee to manage your Twitter feed on their own.

How To Get Twitter Followers And Increase Twitter Followers

Posted on 25 August 2009 by Joel Mark Witt

Get-Twitter-Followers

Why You Should Focus To Get More Followers On Twitter

People care about numbers – plain and simple.

Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that follower count doesn’t matter. Although you don’t need a million people following you to be positioned as a leader on Twitter – people still consider this as a measurement of success. That’s just the way we humans work.

The number of followers you have is a way for people to quantify and measure your reach and “success” on Twitter. Remember, people need tangible ways to label and sort information. Follower counts are easy to look at and sum up someone’s position and status socially and professionally. One of your goals should be to increase twitter followers.

What Do Top Twitter Followers Look For

Real world connections

If you meet people in the real world that use Twitter your chances of getting them to follow you are high.

Good content

If you produce and post great content that is helpful and valuable, followers will be attracted to you and your business. This is what the top Twitter followers look for – leaders with great content.

Personality

The photo you use on your profile, how your Twitter page looks, and the style you portray also attracts people.

How To Obtain Targeted Followers And Keep Them

Make yourself searchable

Adding yourself to Twitter Directories. Our favorite is Twellow (www.Twellow.com).
Remember that new followers will only see your most recent 20 posts, so make them count.

Leaders follow first

As we mentioned before – search and follow your targeted followers. Leaders take action and reach out first to follow others.

Ride the coattails of successful Tweeters – the Kevin Rose Twitter Method

Find a big player in your industry and begin following their followers. For example if I were an organic food company I would log onto Whole Foods Twitter page (www.Twitter.com/wholefoods) and begin following all the people who follow them. Whole Foods has done all the work for me by collecting the people who are interested in organic food.

Use directories of high profile people

Review these three sites:

Follow your peers

Obviously you don’t live in a bubble. Surely your peers and others in your industry are on Twitter. Follow them.

Add yourself to the following sites:

Another great option to gain more exposure for your Twitter account is to link your Facebook to Twitter.

Get recommended

If you post valuable information, your followers will RT you to their followers. Also try

  • www.Twitter.com/MrTweets Recommendation service
  • Follow Friday is a simple game where you recommend other people on Twitter and they recommend you by using the hashtag #FollowFriday

Put yourself out there

People  won’t follow you if they don’t know you are there, make sure to put yourself out there by adding yourself to the Twitter directories listed in this guide. Also be sure to add your Twitter link to all your communications.

Add your full twitter URL to the following places. Your URL is www.Twitter.com/USERNAME. Be sure to replace “username” with your own username. For example the full Folk Media URL is www.Twitter.com/FolkMedia

Add your URL to:

  • badges/widgets with status or feeds
  • Business Cards
  • Websites
  • Blogs
  • E-mail Signatures
  • Newsletters
  • Presentations (last slide)
  • Promotional products
  • Thoughtfully comment on blogs/articles/forum discussions with links to your Twitter/website
  • Invite your supporters via e-mail blast/newsletter

Get Started

What are you waiting for? Get started now in gaining new Twitter followers and let us know how it goes.
